Self-affirmation is synonymous with setting boundaries. Learning how to set boundaries and being able to communicate them clearly to others is a skill that can be developed.
In the story “Late for everything”, Louise was already starting to feel frustrated with Steven, her manager. We can see that she is still having difficulty asserting herself and setting boundaries, which increases her frustration.
Your manager does not have the sole responsibility for the quality of your work relationships and well-being. It is a shared responsibility.
Louise finds it difficult to describe the anxiety she feels about her work load. In order to manage her frustrations more effectively, she must express her feelings verbally, and this means using her one-on-one meetings with her manager. In order for Steven to gain a better understanding of her concerns and meet her needs, Louise must prepare what she is going to say and use “I”. On his side, Steven should provide a safe space, as well as a caring and empathetic ear.
There are times when asserting yourself is easier, and others times when it is more challenging. Being aware of and acknowledging it is a big step and it will enable you to move forward without feeling guilty. Respect the boundaries you have set so you can avoid frustration from building up and improve your communication skills in your relationships.
