Impaired functioning

Mental health can impact how you function at work just as some aspects of work can impact your mental health.

Steven, her director, has noticed some behavioural changes in Louise, such as her frequent tardiness.

This tardiness represents early warning signs that Louise is struggling. At this stage, Louise is in denial. She isn’t aware that her symptoms are impacting her work and that there is a disconnect between her reality and that of her director. Her perception is affected.

This leads to feelings of irritability and frustration. She takes Steven’s comment personally and mixes the personal with the professional. By comparing herself to others, Louise belittles herself and undermines her self-esteem.

If her symptoms intensify and persist, Louise may no longer be able to function at work.
